origin of the Flash retold; 1st solo Flash title (Summer 1941)
Kentucky Collection
The
Flash Comics imprint had been developed as an anthology title, just in case the new character crashed and burned. Instead, the Flash raced into the hearts of millions of readers. Having proven his popularity, Jay Garrick, the most famous of Golden Age speedsters, was then granted his own title with
All-Flash Quarterly (following the tradition of other DC solo debuts). The few folks unfamiliar with the Crimson Comet were brought up to speed in this first issue with an origin recap, and were entertained by a comic full of solo Flash goodness.
The book would enjoy a healthy run throughout the war period, cementing the Flash's status as one of DC's top draws. Interestingly, the title of the Flash's new solo venture was the result of a readership contest. National Periodicals (later DC Comics) felt they needed to distinguish the new book from the already existing
Flash Comics. A canny young reader decided to merge
Flash Comics and the title of
All Star Comics (also featuring the Flash) to get the winning title of
All-Flash Quarterly.
The Jay Garrick Flash of the Golden Age grins cheerily as he runs past the viewer on the cover of this bonafide key, Garrick is actually running at such a speed here that he is setting fire to the ground he trods upon which trails behind him as he dashes off into comic book lore. This comic has long been a popular collectible and this example is one of the highest-graded known with only three copies above it, this QES-certified comic boasts impenetrable blacks, clean whites, and vivid reds and yellows, the sturdy perimeter only adds to the undeniable appeal of this copy. A Flash DCEU movie is on the horizon, which makes this a perfect time to invest in this classic collectible.
