off-white pages; QES certified - criteria met: preferred staple placement + exceptional staple area + exceptional spine + perfect cover edges + deep color strike (red); 1 of 1 at the top! WWII Japanese bondage/torture cover; Human Torch story (2/44) Highest GradedSyd Shores had the thankless task of stepping into the breach whenever Alex Schomburg was unable to create covers for Captain America Comics, and as most Golden Age mavens agree, he did an admirable job of keeping the continuity flowing along seamlessly. This oddball Japanese torture cover is incredibly well balanced, as both sides of the page mirror the action of one another. Cap drops in from stage left to clobber one of the ogres as Bucky prepares to dispatch his comrade on the right, and the look of the fellow at center is simply priceless, as he is well-aware his number is up. This cover is quite beautiful in its composition, which makes it an outlier from all of the helter-skelter wartime covers Golden Age fans are accustomed to.
Captain America Comics #35 was released in February 1944, at the height of the struggle in the Pacific theater. This issue features an Otto Binder story and a Syd Shores torture cover. This copy earned a CGC 9.4 Universal Grade, and has off-white pages, which would be considered an exemplary designation for a modern comic, let alone an almost 80-year-old classic! This book is QES Certified, with preferred staple placement, exceptional staple area, an exceptional spine, perfect cover edges, and a deep red color strike. The QES Certification and high grade come together to signify this as a miraculous copy. Any copy of this book is an amazing find, with only 64 copies recorded on the CGC Census, and this is the highest graded example known! This is the only 9.4 CGC copy of this classic, not the kind of Golden Age book you see every day.
