Spider-Man's first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 was an overnight sensation, leading to a hurriedly prepared solo title from co-creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. (Marvel still added the top-selling Fantastic Four's first crossover as insurance.) The book remains one of the cornerstones of comic collecting — featuring the first appearance of J. Jonah Jameson as one of the most iconic supporting characters in the history of comics. The book is also notable for introducing The Chameleon as Spidey’s first supervillain. The evil Master of Disguise has been one of the major missing figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is finally set to make his big-screen debut in this year’s Kraven the Hunter film.
This is one of a variety of copies of Amazing Spider-Man #1 in this auction, and, like the others, it has some condition issues, but they all have managed to retain their eye appeal, with bold hues that jump off the cover. Any serious investment collector should keep an eye on this copy as Spider-Man keys are always going up in value, regardless of grade, and with the current state of the marketplace, it is advised to scoop up a copy before the asking prices are out of reach.
