Spider-Man's first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 was an overnight sensation, leading to a hurriedly prepared solo title from co-creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. (Marvel still added the top-selling Fantastic Four's first crossover as insurance.) The book remains one of the cornerstones of comic collecting — featuring the first appearance of J. Jonah Jameson as one of the most iconic supporting characters in the history of comics. The book is also notable for introducing The Chameleon as Spidey’s first supervillain. The evil Master of Disguise has been one of the major missing figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is finally set to make his big-screen debut in this year’s Kraven the Hunter film.
Like the 5.0 copy of ASM #1 in this auction this book also suffers from the dreaded Marvel chipping, a result of the cheap stock the publisher was using at the time before the imprint took hold of the Silver Age and started selling massive numbers of their superhero titles. Fortunately, the chipping is the only serious concern with this copy, the colors are bold and the rest of the book is solid. The market for SA Marvel keys has never been stronger, and with each new release of a Spidey movie the prices on this classic keep trending upwards.
