Flessel Sandman coverCreig Flessel’s excellent cover for Adventure Comics #51 shows Sandman firing his gas gun at a group of what appear to be corrupt politicians, who are obviously up to no good. It was pulpy scenarios like this one that drew readers to newsstands to plunk down a shiny dime and find out what else this seductive issue had in store. The enchanting power of Golden Age comics still holds sway over collectors of today who can’t resist the bright four-color action presented in these captivating tomes of yesteryear. This issue also features a classic Hour-Man story along with the requisite anthology potboilers that made the era so much fun.
The yellow background of this Creig Flessel cover has barely diminished in the 80+ years since this was originally published. The original Sandman was a major Golden Age character, and hardly ever appeared in this form after the 1940s. As well, there are only 34 copies of this book recorded on the CGC census, and only seven at a higher grade than this. This is a beautiful copy of an absolute classic.
