2nd app. Archie? (published same month as Pep #22); scarce! 1st Mrs. Grundy; Classic Steel Sterling headshot splash; headlights cover; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 8 (CBI)
Having garnered success with the teen funnies market with Wilbur, Bob Montana once again struck pay dirt with Archie, soon to become a household name and one of the most recognizable of American icons. At this point, however, he was just a clumsy, awkward, lovable (and love-struck) teen, with his cast of characters slowly but surely building one by one. This early appearance features the debut of Mrs. Grundy, another instantly relatable character meant to evoke nostalgic pangs from readers toiling away in their own small-town schoolrooms under the watchful eye of disapproving matronly instructors. This issue is also notable for featuring the second appearance of Archie Andrews, which was published right after his first appearance in Pep #22.
The longevity and sustained interest in Archie Andrews is a bit of an anomaly in the history of comics, as the ginger-haired teenager has no superpowers or origin story, just a hefty dose of Americana and some corny humor have carried this franchise a long way. Inspiring modern-day TV shows like “Riverdale” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” the Archie flame still burns strong making this early appearance an airtight investment book. There are only two copies graded higher on the CGC census, and a scant 36 copies recorded overall. Bob Montana’s classic Golden Age cover art is in impressive shape as the colors and structural integrity of the book show few signs of the 80+ year vintage of this amazing collectible.
