DESCRIPTION
1st app. of The Avenger (Dick Benson), 1st app. of Justice, Inc.; September, 1939
A 15% BUYER'S PREMIUM WILL BE ADDED TO THIS ITEM AT CONCLUSION OF THE AUCTION
Street & Smith's third major character joins The Shadow and Doc Savage on the newsstands in "The Avenger" debuting in September 1939. When globe-trotting adventurer and millionaire businessman Dick Benson's wife and daughter are killed by criminals, he vows to avenge them by fighting crime. By combining elements of The Shadow and Doc Savage, Street & Smith created their next successful superhero.
The first issue's story "Justice, Inc." features The Avenger uniting with other crimefighters to form Justice Inc. A precursor to teams like the Justice Society and the Justice League, Justice Inc. was likely a direct influence on them. Many think of the Avenger as the last great pulp hero, and these heroes lead directly into the newly burgeoning field of superhero comics rising up concurrently.
The Avenger went on to run for three years but stayed in the public consciousness for much longer. He went on to appear in a handful of other pulps and star in comics and books even into the 21st century. While Captain America may be known as 'the first Avenger', we all know the first Avenger was truly Dick Benson, pulp hero.
