Bill Everett art, 2nd app. of Human Torch (origin) & Angel, ad for Silver Streak Comics #1
After the smash success of
Marvel Comics #1, publisher Martin Goodman added "Mystery" to the title to lure in pulp fans — but there's still a lot of superhero history made in these pages! That includes jungle lord Ka-Zar making his own transition from pulp magazines into comic books. Bill Everett's lushly illustrated Sub-Mariner is here, as well, in a classic story held over from the first issue.
There's also the Angel featured as this issue's cover star. Mostly forgotten now, this Golden Age superhero was once successful enough to spend over a decade with his own solo spot in the book. This beloved collector's item also has work from the early stars of Golden Age illustration, featuring the richly deft line work of Carl Burgos, Paul Gustavson, and Al Anders!
The incredibly rare Marvel Mystery #2 is a highly sought-after entity amongst Golden Age collectors, copies rarely surface at auction and when they do there is heated competition over this book. Holding an important place in the history of the House of Ideas, this restored copy sits about halfway up the census, and the Charles Mazoujian cover is a classic and iconic image of the period.
