Infantino cvr/art; 1st appearance Phantom Stranger
The Phantom Stranger is an enigma, possessing a scope of impressive powers, but also having no defined origin story, he is an immortal spirit who spends most of his time investigating occult occurrences, debunking fraudulent ghost legends and quack magicians. The character has proven to have a cult fan base and has lasted the test of time to become a DC mainstay since his inception in this first appearance, published in 1952. In his debut, Phantom Stranger is primarily a mysterious sleuth, with the power to appear and disappear without a trace, who does battle with some delusional and dangerous villains. He would go on to become a truly powerful hero with deep connections to DC’s occult realm that grew to prominence in the late ’60s.
Boasting a spooky Carmine Infantino cover, the first appearance of the Phantom Stranger is a fairly difficult issue to find, with less than one-hundred recorded on the census. This copy sits in the perfect place between value and condition, being available to a larger swath of bidders thanks to its grade, but also presenting a very appealing chromatic scheme, and a generally solid structure. The wear about the edges of the cover does not affect the central image significantly, so Phantom Stranger fans are sure to be on high alert when this book comes up for auction.
