Jeff Smith story, cvr/art; 1st app. of Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, Smiley Bone, the Great Red Dragon & TedRecently celebrating the 30th anniversary of the first issue’s publication, Bone creator Jeff Smith announced that plans are moving forward with an animated adaptation of the beloved comic book on Netflix, overseen by Smith and a handpicked “dream team” of collaborators. The story arc of Bone has been compared to Mark Twain’s “Huckleberry Finn” thanks to its mixture of humor and darker themes that underpin the childish appeal of the main characters. Influenced by sources as varied as J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings,” Carl Barks’ masterful work on Disney’s “Uncle Scrooge,” and Walt Kelly’s “Pogo,” Bone has grown to become a modern epic of the comic book form, that has won over many devoted fans who await the animated series with great interest. This issue is where it all started, self-published by Jeff Smith in his own imprint Cartoon Books, the first printing of Bone #1 is a valuable and sought-after issue that has been quickly gaining traction in the collectibles marketplace. Bone #1 has been a desirable item for some time, but, thanks to the news of a Netflix adaptation currently being underway, the excitement surrounding this book is at a fever pitch. This 9.6 QES-certified example is in wonderful condition, with a perfect blue & red color strike, and subtle grey tones that flesh out the main characters in stark detail. The deceptive simplicity of the design of the three protagonists stands in powerful contrast to the more sinister themes of the title, as is hinted at by the evil eyes surrounding the trio. The most recently registered sale of the first printing of Bone #1 notched $4,000, and we are expecting to see a new record set at auction for this red-hot Copper Age milestone.
