White pgs; Universal holder; bright colors; sharp edges
brutal burnt to the bone Schomburg bondage coverLet it never be said that Alex Schomburg was a subtle artist, or one who indulged in quieter, calmer subject matter. His imagination given free reign to run wild, and given the imperative to support the war effort and gin up sales and patriotism, he would come through like few others. Witness this downright gonzo cover, wherein his fearless pen, frenzied style, and insane eye for detail help create one of the nastiest, most infamous, most berserker of all Timely WWII images. Post-Pearl Harbor, all sense of proportion and political correctness went pretty much out the window in most US pop culture media, but even then, this must have stood out from the pack, boasting numerous racial caricatures, violent imagery, sexual innuendo, and All-American head-pounding -- plus one of the most gruesome punishments ever meted out to a baddie on a Golden Age comic cover. Collectors of war-era covers simply adore this issue as a result. As with most Golden Age Timelys, this issue was pulped into scarcity during the paper drives of the early 1940s, and what few copies remained post-war were surely disposed of by horrified parents alarmed by its gory cover, so if you find a copy (say, this one), grab it post haste, you never know when you might see another.
