Having created and developed the character for Timely, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby eventually moved on to National, enticed by substantially higher salaries and less-crushing deadlines, as well as the chance to expand their horizons beyond just the Super Soldier. The pair would go on to become one of the most inlfluential and popular artist teams of the Golden Age, and careers that spanned nearly half a century and practically every genre and publisher in comics. Meanwhile, their patriotic creation continued to attract millions of readers, his increasingly bombastic adventures not only entertaining Americans shaken by the war years, but sustaining morale and providing badly-needed pep to an ailing, Depression-weary country. This important issue marked Kirby's last outing on the character for nearly twenty years.
