Fred Ray Nazi WWII cover; Superman / Frozen Caveman story; Fatman's secret identity revealed to Mr. America; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 7 (CBI)
Action Comics #44 features Fred Ray's awesome wartime cover that looks straight out of Richard Fleischer's big-screen
Superman cartoons. The actual Nazi-fighting in the book, however, is handled in stories featuring Zatara, Congo Bill, and Mr. America. (The latter stars in a particularly disturbing story about factory workers being murdered by being thrown into the sky by cannon, along with Mr. America learning the secret identity of his sidekick Fatman.) This issue is also notable for preserving a real Golden Age boom for new comics, with in-store ads for Wonder Woman's first appearance in
All Star Comics #8, her cover debut in
Sensation Comics #1, and a new solo series launching with
Green Lantern #1.
