Sub-Mariner Comics #1 brought Marvel's premiere superhero into his first solo book, and gave Prince Namor a new place in history as the first character to battle Hitler's Axis forces on the cover of a comic book. Alex Schomburg's compelling Nazi-bashing illustration for this issue stands out as one of the finest examples of the wartime battle cover. Namor's creator, Bill Everett, said he came up with the character’s name after writing several "noble" words backward, Roman being one of them, hence the moniker Namor. The Sub-Mariner was featured in the very first issue that Timely Comics ever released, Marvel Comics #1, and went on to appear in many titles alongside his Golden Age compatriots Human Torch, and Captain America.

First appearing in the legendary Marvel Comics #1 in 1939, Namor would be awarded his own title a couple of years later, due to popular demand. Starring in his own self-titled book, the Sub-Mariner would go on to wreak havoc among the Axis forces during WWII and remains a beloved figure in the modern-day Marvel Universe. This 4.0 copy of Sub-Mariner #1 is in respectable condition, with the majority of wear located on the spine of the book, leaving the rest of the cover quite fresh and attractive. With rumors abounding about future appearances of Namor in the MCU, owning a copy of this book is certainly a savvy decision. With only 72 original condition copies on the census, this is not a book you will come across with regularity, so don’t miss out.
Overstreet Guide 2021 VG (4.0) value = $7,600.
