The August 1928 issue of Weird Tales is an all-time classic. Featuring the story "Red Shadows" by Robert E. Howard, which introduced his recurring character Solomon Kane. A 17th-century Puritan adventurer traveling around the world, he would go on to become one of Weird Tales' most popular recurring characters and even help inspire and lead to the success of Howard's later character Conan the Barbarian.
This issue also features the first-ever published work of literary titan and playwright Tennessee Williams as Thomas Lanier Williams (his actual given name) in the story "The Vengeance of Nitocris". Written when he was only 16 years old, Williams was paid $35 (more than $500 in today's money) for this tale of weird historical fiction. This issue also features stories by classic Weird Tales writers including Robert Chambers, Frank Long Jr., and Edmond Hamilton. This issue's Senf cover highlights a scene from Howard's "Red Shadows". This is one of the most influential single issues of Weird Tales and a classic key issue.
This copy of the August 1928 issue of Weird Tales earned a 4.5 VG+ grade. Containing tan pages and a sharp complete spine with only slight stress, this book has held up remarkably well over the past century since its release. The classic Senf cover appears beautifully in the center of the crisp red border. A crease and some minor stress do not detract from how sharp the red and white colors of this book are. As a key issue of Weird Tales, this is a very desirable pulp and will only become harder to find.
