Origin & 1st app of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Splinter, & Shredder; Kevin Eastman/Peter Laird cover/art; Wraparound cover
Quentin Eastman Collection
Anybody who grew up in the 1980s understands the significance of this comic book to collectors and investors. This rare example of a Copper Age Classic is also the
Action #1, the
Showcase #4, and
Amazing Fantasy #15 of the '80s. Self-published by scrappy creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, this book contains the origin stories of the Ninja Turtles and the Splinter, plus the introduction of Shredder and the Foot.
The moody cover (an homage to Frank Miller's
Ronin mini-series) features deep blacks and bloody reds as our heroes stand ready against the forces of evil. Of course, this all before the Playmates toy company licensed the cultish comic. Eastman and Laird's characters were soon to be toned down and made more child-friendly. In these early books, however, they pulled no punches on the way to becoming top pop-culture icons. The time is nigh to grab your own copy before the price soars once again.
_________________________________________________
The whole thing started as a parody of contemporary mainstream comics. The X-Men, the world’s most famous teenage mutants, ruled the roost, and Frank Miller’s introduction of ninjas had taken hold. The idea of “teenage mutant ninjas'' slapped the two trends together, and, well, what could be more absurd than making them turtles? The first TMNT comics first showed up in hole-in-the-wall comics shops, and somewhere along the line, some insightful publishers got a hold of this bizarre-sounding property, saw its potential, liked it, enriched it, and made it a worldwide phenomenon. This Kevin Eastman signature series copy from the Quentin Eastman Collection features a sketch by the creator and has been graded 9.0 with white pages; with prices for the TMNT’s first issue breaking auction records regularly at higher grades, this is guaranteed to be a hot item at auction.
Overstreet Guide 2022 VF/NM (9.0) value = $15,000.
