classic Will Eisner cvr
The classic (and controversial) cover to The Spirit #22 turned the 1950 issue into one of the most revered and sought-after books in the historic run of the title. Will Eisner made sure the issue stood out on the newsstands with the fantastically fatal feminine charms of Skinny Bones (modeled on Lauren Bacall). The image also caught the eye of the New York State Joint Legislative Committee to Study the Publication of Comics. A 1951 report from the investigators would cite Skinny for a depiction of "brutality, violence and crime"—interestingly enough, since she could have been included under the category of "sexually suggestive cartoons." The CGC Census shows just over 100 copies of this fan favorite on the boards, making this a tough find for Spirit collectors on the hunt for this sought-after issue.
