Joe Shuster cvr/art; origin story, pin-up bc; Comic Book Impact rating of 10 (CBI)
The first name in superheroes has always been Superman. "Look, up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's...Superman!" Those words identified the character for decades and the big red "S" on his chest is one of the most-easily-recognized symbols in the world. Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman has enjoyed decades of popularity and has been featured in cartoons, serials, movies, television shows, and pretty much anything else you can put a price tag on. As one of the top Golden Age keys, this issue features Superman's origin story, a must-read for Man of Steel zealots. Often overlooked is the historical importance of this book, which showcases three of the most important supporting characters in the Superman pantheon: Ma and Pa Kent, as well as Lois Lane.

Superman #1 is an all-time key issue. With cover copy heralding "The Complete Story of the Daring Exploits of the One and Only Superman,” this classic comic proved that superheroes were here to stay. Released in the summer of 1939, this issue spun Superman out from Action Comics, and into his own self-titled book. This copy earned a 1.0 CGC Universal Grade and has cream to off-white pages. Although this book has seen better days, any unrestored complete copy of this issue is a miraculous find. There are a scant 165 copies recorded on the CGC Census, only 70 of which are "Universal" - not restored or qualified.

This copy has great eye appeal, and a handsome front cover. The yellow border is extremely sharp, the red Superman logo is crisp and complete, and the iconic Joe Shuster illustration jumps right off the page. Superman #1 populates the same rarefied air as Action Comics #1, Detective Comics #27, and Batman #1 as some of the most sought-after items in the history of collectibles. These are books that are extremely desirable and constantly rising in value, at every grade. Another 1.0 copy sold for $137,760 last year. This blue-chip investment piece will make you the envy of the collecting community.

Overstreet Guide 2021 GD (2.0) value = $126,500.
