DESCRIPTION
A 15% BUYER'S PREMIUM WILL BE ADDED TO THIS ITEM AT CONCLUSION OF THE AUCTION
ow/w pgs; QES Certified: Criteria met: impressive prime focal area + glossy + deep color strike (grey, green & black)
Bernard Baily cvr/art; Origin & 1st app. the Spectre; Comic Book Impact rating of 8 (CBI)
One of the darkest of Golden Age origin stories, the opening panels of the Spectre's first appearance feature our hero, Jim Corrigan, stuffed into a barrel, encased in cement and drowned, a grisly fate even by pre-code standards. Returning as a spirit of vengeance, Corrigan then goes on his merry way, smiting evildoers in increasingly ironic manners, their deaths becoming more and more gruesome. This surreal and unforgettable series has proven to be a cult favorite.

The title More Fun Comics stands in ironic opposition to the dark tale contained within this issue's pages. Invented by Superman co-creator Jerry Seigel, the Spectre's origin story spanned three issues, and soon after the anti-hero went on to become a popular figure in DC's stable, eventually joining the Justice Society of America and, later, enjoying a renaissance in the mid-90s. The recent resurgence in popularity led to increased interest in the character and, increased value in Spectre books in general.

Released in February 1940, More Fun Comics #52 introduced readers to the Spectre, Jim Corrigan, a cult favorite supernatural DC anti-hero. This is a major Golden Age key that would help pave the way for the popularity of the JSA, this is also an incredibly rare book. Only 47 copies are recorded on the CGC Census, with only 20 being Universal Grade. This More Fun Comics #52 earned a 3.0 from CGC and has off-white to white pages. There are very few sales of this book recorded and not even a single public sale in 2021. This is an amazing find in any condition, and this copy looks fantastic and presents far better than your typical 3.0. The front cover is sharp, retaining beautiful colors despite the more than 80 years since its publication. The central image of the Spectre haunting a group of gangsters is pristine, with only minor stress being visible along the edges of the book. Rare key issues like this do not come to auction often, and the next time this issue appears, it will certainly be worth even more than its already impressive price tag.

Overstreet Guide 2021 G/VG (3.0) value = $18,300
