Origin & 1st Flash, Hawkman, Johnny Thunder; Comic Book Impact rating of 9 (CBI)
Flash Comics boasted some of the most distinctive and finely drawn covers of the Golden Age, thanks to the skill of artists such as Sheldon Moldoff. His malleable style worked well both for children's cartoon comics and action-packed hero books. As seen on this classic cover, Moldoff's fine lines and deft sense of drama create one of the comic industry's most lasting images. The artist communicates the character's super skills with a few simple details, including the sense of speed created by motion lines and the path of a bullet fired by the thug in the foreground. These elements combine to form a perfect introduction to the newly-minted hero.

This issue remains a top collectible and serious investment for introducing the world to two of DC Comics' biggest names: The Flash and Hawkman. The Flash, of course, has gone on to big-screen and small-screen stardom; Hawkman made his big-screen debut in Black Adam, and fans are hotly anticipating both characters' future roles in James Gunn's revamping of the DC Extended Universe.
Racing into this auction, Flash Comics #1 is a Golden Age key that introduced audiences to DC mainstays The Flash and Hawkman. Certified CGC 1.5, although noted as brittle pages, the seller had the book slabbed and said he was surprised by the brittle. "I flipped through that book before sending in, the pages are nice and supple." A photo of the pages is included alongside the back cover scan.

The cover presents sharp colors, and the iconic Sheldon Moldoff illustration remains in admirable shape considering this book’s 80+ years of existence. This is a beautiful complete example, and any signs of wear cannot detract from the rarity and historic importance of this book. Only 85 copies are recorded on the CGC Census, with only 45 being Universal Grade; a 2.0 copy of Flash Comics #1 recently sold for $92,000. A historic issue like this is extremely desirable in any condition and becomes increasingly more difficult to find over the years.
