Greg Land pencils/Jay Leisten inks; page 4 Splash Original Art (Marvel Comics, 2021); 11" x 17"
From Marvel’s Modern Age – Original comic art of “Spider-Man in the Symbiote Black Suit” and “J. Jonah Jameson” in New York City

Gorgeous Full Splash of Spider-Man in the Symbiote Black Suit from the 1st Issue in the Crossroads storyline! The best page from the entire book! The black costume’s 1st appearance was in Amazing Spider-Man #252.The art is accomplished in ink over graphite on Bristol board, measuring approximately 11 x 17 inches and is in excellent condition.

The History of the Black Suit:

The first appearance of a symbiote occurs in The Amazing Spider-Man #252, The Spectacular Spider-Man #90, and Marvel Team-Up #141 (released concurrently in May 1984), in which Spider-Man brings one home to Earth after the Secret Wars (Secret Wars #8, which was released months later, details his first encounter with it). The concept was initially created by a Marvel Comics reader; the publisher purchased the idea for $220. The original design was then modified by Mike Zeck, at which point it became the Venom symbiote. The concept would be explored and used throughout multiple storylines, spin-off comics and derivative projects.

The Story:

PETER DAVID AND GREG LAND DO THE TIME WARP AGAIN! After three sense-shattering series, Peter David, Greg Land, Jay Leisten and Frank D’Armata – the entire SYMBIOTE SPIDER-MAN crew – RETURN! This time, they’re taking Spider-Man down the road less traveled to the supremely psychedelic CROSSROADS DIMENSION! In their most ambitious series yet, the SYMBIOTE team puts Peter Parker and his alien costume on a collision course with none other than THE INCREDIBLE HULK, in a story set just before Peter David’s landmark run on The Hulk series!

Artists Information

Jay Leisten started his career in comics as an intern at Top Cow. He began working for Marvel & DC on covers for several titles. Within a few months, he was working on titles such as Thor, Legion, and Black Panther. Jay worked on a three year run with Greg Land on Uncanny X-men, and one year on Iron Man, Monsters Unleashed, Astonishing X-Men and more. Others include Moon Knight, Nightwing, Outsiders, Captain Britain & Dark X-Men, Death of Wolverine, Secret Empire, as well as several other Marvel projects.

Greg Land is an American comic book artist, best known for his work for Marvel Comics’ Uncanny X-Men, Birds of Prey, and Fantastic Four.. Land’s first job was with an independent publisher as the artist for StormQuest. He began working for DC Comics in 1999, finishing the covers for Birds of Prey, based on the sketches of Brian Stelfreeze. He also had runs as penciler on both Birds of Prey and Nightwing.

Land also worked at CrossGen Comics on Sojourn. The series ran from July 2001 through May 2004, for a total of 34 issues.

After CrossGen went out of business, Land went on to work at Marvel Comics, where he did covers to various series. This led to a collaboration with writer Greg Pak as the main artist of X-Men: Phoenix – Endsong. Following that project, Land became the penciler for Ultimate Fantastic Four. He produced the artwork for a crossover between Marvel’s Supremeverse and the Ultimate Universe, entitled Ultimate Power, which was written by Brian Michael Bendis, J. Michael Straczynski and Jeph Loeb. Land also created the covers for Marvel Zombies 3 which were all homages to posters of notable zombie movies.

In 2008, Land illustrated Uncanny X-Men #500. From then until December 2011 he would illustrate several sporadic sets of issues, totaling 22 in all, his last being issue #544. During this same period he also illustrated issue #210 and 235–237 of X-Men: Legacy. In 2012, Land illustrated issues #5–8 and 11–12 of the relaunched Uncanny X-Men.
