About Tales from the Crypt:

Tales from the Crypt, sometimes titled; HBO’s Tales from the Crypt, is an American horror anthology television series that ran from June 10, 1989 to July 19, 1996 on the premium cable channel HBO for seven seasons with a total of 93 episodes. The show’s title is based on the 1950’s EC Comics series of the same name and most of the content originated in that comic or other EC Comics of the time; The Haunt of Fear, The Vault of Horror, Crime SuspenStories, Shock SuspenStories, and Two-Fisted Tales. The series is hosted by the Crypt Keeper, a wisecracking corpse performed by puppeteers and voiced by John Kassir.

Because it was aired on HBO, a premium cable television channel, Tales from the Crypt was allowed to have full freedom from censorship by network standards and practices. As a result, HBO allowed the series to include content that had not appeared in most television series up to that time, such as graphic violence, profanity, sexual activity, and nudity. The series is subsequently edited for such content when broadcast in syndication or on basic cable. While the series began production in the United States, in the final season, filming moved to the United Kingdom, resulting in episodes which revolved around British characters.

Each episode began with a tracking shot that led to the front door of the decrepit mansion of the Crypt Keeper, the show’s host. Once inside, the camera pans down from the foyer to the hallways and stairways, finally descending into the basement. The Crypt Keeper then pops out from his coffin, cackling wildly; green slime pours down over the screen as the main title appears. The Crypt Keeper is depicted as an animated corpse, as opposed to the original comics in which he was a living human being. The wisecracking Crypt Keeper (performed by puppeteers like Van Snowden, Mike Elizalde, Frank Charles Lutkus, Patty Maloney, David Arthur Nelson, Anton Rupprecht, Shaun Smith, David Stinnent, Mike Trcic and Brock Winkless and voiced by John Kassir) would then introduce the episode with intentionally hackneyed puns, e.g., his frequent greeting to viewers: “Hello, Boils and Ghouls” or “Hello, Kiddies.” Each episode was self-contained, and was bookended by an outro sequence, again involving the Crypt Keeper.

The unique original comic book cover art created for each episode by artist Mike Vosburg was depicted during the opening sequence of the Tales From The Crypt broadcast. Upon opening the massive horror book of tales, the Crypt Keeper would reveal to the audience that cover image of from that night’s story.

The image from the show is for reference only.

Artist Information

Mike Vosburg is an American comic book artist primarily known for his work on the Tales from the Crypt TV series. Mike Vosburg’s comics career began in the 1960’s, when as a teenager he started Masquerader, one of the first comic book fanzines. He began working in underground comics in the 1970’s, with creations such as Split Screen, written by Tom Veitch. Later in the 1970’s & 1980’s, Vosburg contributed to horror titles by Western Publishing and Charlton Comics. His story “Mail Order Brides” published in Kitchen Sink Press’s Bizarre Sex #3, was in a similar horror/mystery vein. Around this time, Vosburg also did various work for DC Comics and Marvel Comics. He is probably best known for his work from that period on Savage She-Hulk, Sisterhood of Steel, and G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. He also worked on the Valiant Comics’ titles Bloodshot and Archer & Armstrong. From 1989 to 1996, for the TV series Tales from the Crypt, Vosburg illustrated comic book covers designed to look like the original 1950’s comics. Originally hired to do concept drawings for the wraparound sequence, Vosburg ended up storyboarding the title segment as well as illustrating many book covers used in the show’s 93 episodes. While Vosburg still does occasional comics work such as covers and pinups, or his self-published Lori Lovecraft books, most of his time is currently devoted to television and film. He has done storyboarding work for such directors as John Frankenheimer, Robert Zemeckis, Allan Arkush, and Gilbert Adler; on projects as diverse as David Mamet’s The Water Engine, the Elian Gonzalez Story, Prince Charming, and Demon Knight. He has also done storyboarding for music videos, such as “Stan” and “Let Me Blow Ya Mind.”
