Historic 1st page to the Maggie and Hopey Mechanics story by Jaime!

Few stories are more associated with the 80s independent comics boom than Jaime Hernandez's Locas, telling the decades spanning story of friends/lovers Maggie Chascarrillo and Hopey Glass. The characters were introduced in the first issue of Love and Rockets, but the story doesn't begin in earnest until issue #2. Many readers introduction to these characters began with this story, making this page the first one ever read from one of the most oft-reprinted stories of its time. The drawing here is nothing short of iconic, with the portraits lining the top of the page, including Maggie and her first love interest, Rand Race, and then there's the large panel showing Hopey reading a letter from Maggie with the text of the letter along the left side of the panel. The first section of the story is told through the device of Maggie's letters to Hopey, and is one of the most recognizable aspects of the early stories. Jaime's drawing, while changing over the years, is already at a very high level at this early stage, from the deceptively simple faces, to the dense, lived in environment, each of the background characters appears to have their own equally interesting story to tell. A true piece of comics history by one of the most important creators of his era. Pen and ink. Art is in excellent condition. Signed and dated by Hernandez.

Artist Information

Jaime is one half of Los Bros. Hernandez, creators of the alternative perennial Love and Rockets, going strong since 1981. Jaime's Locas stories follow Maggie and Hopey and their evolving lives in Los Angeles. His crisp drawing, influenced by classic DC and Archie styles has made him a favorite of both readers and other artists.
