Ditko cvr/art; 1st Silver Age Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) (HBO Max series coming!) COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 8 (CBI)
Born out of the Cold War that dominated the public consciousness throughout most of the 1960s, Captain Atom was one of the nuclear-themed superheroes of the era that was designed to cash in on the anti-communist pop culture trends of the period. Along with Dr. Solar, Nukla, and countless other characters of the time, Captain Atom would prove to have the longevity and appeal that would carry him through into the modern-day. Starting life in the pages of Charlton’s Space Adventures, Captain Atom would soon be rewarded with his own title, which would continue the numbering system of Strange Suspense Stories at issue #78. The significance of Captain Atom #83 is that it debuts the Silver Age Blue Beetle, a Golden Age fave that enjoyed a 1960’s reboot like many other classic heroes from the early days of the industry. The recent news of a Blue Beetle film in the works has only added greater interest to this classic issue. Illustrated by the legendary Steve Ditko, Captain Atom has enjoyed sustained interest after being acquired by DC Comics and is even distinguished as being the direct inspiration for the Watchmen’s Dr. Manhattan.
