John Romita Sr. pencils and inks; black & white cover for house ad; 1975; image size 7.25" x 10.25"

Published in 1975 by the Fireside Books division of Simon & Shuster, Son of Origins of Marvel Comics was an indispensable resource for a generation of comics fans. Along with its predecessor, Origins of Marvel Comics, these books were, for many readers, the introduction to the history of the expansive Marvel universe. John Romita provided a fully painted cover to the book, but for advertising, due to the printing limitations of the time, Romita created a black and white version of the cover. The drawing is stunning, beautiful renditions of Iron Man, Daredevil, Marvel Girl, Silver Surfer, Scarlet Witch, Nick Fury, and the Watcher. A true rarity, and among the most iconic Marvel illustrations of the 1970s. Romita created the drawing on vellum which was mounted to a larger art board, the paste-ups are all original from the period. Pen and ink. Art is in excellent condition.

The image of the printed ad is for reference only.

Artist Information

John Romita was one of the driving forces behind Marvel's Silver Age, he took up the reins on Spider-Man following the departure of Steve Ditko with issue #38. Romita's run on Spider-Man would be long and significant, introducing characters including Mary Jane Watson, the Kingpin and many others. He would be a major contributor to the entire Marvel line throughout the 1970s including designing the look of The Punisher.
