origin & 1st appearance by Lee & Kirby; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 10 (CBI)
Melding elements of Norse mythology with the by-now-standard superhero tropes of the funny pages, Stan Lee followed up his Jekyll & Hyde-style Hulk with this cosmic, high-camp treasure. The book was initially scripted by Stan's brother Larry (to give the overworked and exhausted Lee some breathing room), and penciled with surprising grace and elegance by Jack Kirby. Another instant favorite, the comic confirmed Lee's Midas touch in the early 1960s as the title soon became the bedrock for Marvel's more theatrical and grandiose styling. In recent years, the character has enjoyed yet another renaissance thanks to Marvel's savvy cinematic exploitation, and this debut appearance, already extremely rare thanks to an unusually low print run, has become in even greater demand as a result.

Journey into Mystery #83 introduced audiences to Marvel’s heroic deity, Thor, aka Doctor Don Blake, and future Asgardian Avenger. This copy earned a 7.0 CGC Universal Grade and has off-white to white pages. The iconic Jack Kirby cover is incredibly sharp, featuring a beautiful rendition of Thor swinging his hammer as he takes on a horde of Stone Men of Saturn. The classic Journey into Mystery logo presents a crisp red that almost pops off the page. Another CGC 7.0 Journey into Mystery #83 sold recently for $38,500. This was a major stepping stone in the Marvel Silver Age superhero explosion, an essential building block of the Marvel Universe we all know and love today, and a gorgeous copy of an all-time classic investment key.
