Scrooge made his first appearance in this story as a curmudgeonly man who decides to test Donald and his nephews to see if they are worthy of inheriting his wealth. When Barks first wrote this story he had no idea that Scrooge was going to achieve the popularity that he was soon to obtain. Scrooge's character was to be fleshed out in later issues as a cantankerous, driven adventurer who traveled the world looking for lost treasures and hidden wealth .
