Jack Kirby cover/art; 1st app of Miracle Man; 1st Fantastic Four costumes & establish HQ; Origin retold
This is not the first issue of the Fantastic Four, but it is an issue filled to the brim with firsts. This issue marks the first appearance of the FF's uniforms, which can turn invisible, stretch to incredible lengths, resist powerful flames, and allow Ben Grimm a relaxing day at the beach. This issue also debuts the location of the super-team's headquarters, the design of their Fantasti-car, and even features the first time Stan Lee refers to the series as "The Greatest Comic Magazine in the World." Notably, this issue is also the first to feature an FF fan mail section, the first step in Lee's creation of the Mighty Marvel Fan Base. The vintage Jack Kirby cover design uses the sharp, stark grays of the New York City skyline to highlight the bright reds of Johnny Blaze's flames and the pristine white of the brand new Fantasti-car.
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were firing on all cylinders from the start with The Fantastic Four. Each issue introduced new characters and concepts, from the superteam themselves to The Mole Man, the Skrulls, Silver Age Sub-Mariner, Doctor Doom, and more! Fantastic Four #3 debuted the iconic FF costumes, the Fantasticar, the team’s headquarters, and the Miracle Man! Fantastic Four #3 is presented here in a gorgeous 9.0 grade, with off-white to white pages. The First Family of Marvel is confirmed to be joining the MCU, which has proven to make even lesser-known properties into worldwide sensations, with key issues rising in value as the movies create millions of new fans. In recent years, early FF issues have been rapidly climbing in value, but they are still dramatically undervalued compared to similar 60’s Marvel titles. A 9.0 CGC Fantastic Four #3 sold in 2021 for over $20,000. We surmise this stellar copy could easily exceed that lofty price tag in our 50th Event Auction.
