DESCRIPTION
A 15% BUYER'S PREMIUM WILL BE ADDED TO THIS ITEM AT CONCLUSION OF THE AUCTION
ow/white pgs; Ext(P) ct, pcs added, tear seals, cvr cleaned, interior lightened, reinf.
Bernard Baily cvr/art; Origin & 1st app. the Spectre; Comic Book Impact rating of 8 (CBI)
One of the darkest of Golden Age origin stories, the opening panels of the Spectre's first appearance feature our hero, Jim Corrigan, stuffed into a barrel, encased in cement and drowned, a grisly fate even by pre-code standards. Returning as a spirit of vengeance, Corrigan then goes on his merry way, smiting evildoers in increasingly ironic manners, their deaths becoming more and more gruesome. This surreal and unforgettable series has proven to be a cult favorite.

The title More Fun Comics stands in ironic opposition to the dark tale contained within this issue's pages. Invented by Superman co-creator Jerry Seigel, the Spectre's origin story spanned three issues, and soon after the anti-hero went on to become a popular figure in DC's stable, eventually joining the Justice Society of America and, later, enjoying a renaissance in the mid-90s. The recent resurgence in popularity led to increased interest in the character and, increased value in Spectre books in general.

The extensive professional restoration performed on this book has gifted the collecting world with a wonderful mid-grade copy of this book, which has less than 50 examples listed on the census. This comic is notoriously difficult to find and does not show up at auction frequently, as collectors tend to hold on to this Golden Age key once it is in their possession. The foreboding color scheme that adorns this cover is shockingly fresh given its age, with all the bright and dark spots looking much as they had when they rolled off the printing press. It is always a good idea to invest in Golden Age origin stories in anticipation of a new film or series announcement, and a resulting bounce in value and the rarity of this comic only adds to the investment potential overall.

Overstreet Guide 2022 FN (6.0) value = $10,350.
