This issue marks Wolverine’s first full appearance as the breakout character of Marvel's Bronze Age—as seen when a copy of Incredible Hulk #181 became the first Bronze Age book to break the $100,000 sales mark. Wolverine would go on to become of the biggest pop-culture icons of the past fifty years, with the character reviving the X-Men title as he joined the mutant super team in the ’70s. The ensuing decades have seen Wolverine becoming one of Marvel's most potent weapons in creating hot spin-off titles and guest turns. Wolverine also continues to rule the cinemas, with fans already buzzing over Hugh Jackman’s hotly anticipated return to the character in 2024’s Deadpool 3.

Hulk has been lured to Quebec by the Canadian government on behalf of Georges Baptiste and Marie Carter, scientists on a mission to cure Carter’s brother from the curse of the Wendigo. The Hulk, they plan, can take on the curse and become the Wendigo as her brother returns to normal. In comes this wild new hero-villain, the five-foot-five-inch Wolverine, who bears his claws and takes on the eight-foot-tall mythological beast. Wolverine then tries to capture the Hulk, who is now puzzled that his friend has become his enemy and feels betrayed. Carter ends up in tears at the end and the Hulk comforts her in a heartwarming scene where he shows great tenderness and understanding. Wolverine, of course, later became a member of the X-Men, and eventually was awarded his own series.
