Tell that to a battle-scarred, depression-starved readership shuddering and reeling from the horrors of the Pacific theater of war and a generation of grinding poverty, for whom brash, violent, shamelessly macho covers like these were the only things loud enough to distract them from the daily horrors of early 20th century living. By this point, the war finally seemed winnable, and the mood had shifted from battered yet determined to oddly hopeful, but there was still plenty enough panic and menace in the air that images such as these could still lift spirits and rouse weary commuters. Rangers, like the other Fiction House titles, was known then and now for its clean, lovely illustrative house style, and its defiantly, delightfully aggro cover images. This classic example is among the best-known and most in demand.
