1st app. Dr. Strange, Ancient One, Nightmare and Wong; Jack Kirby cover; 1st Paste-Pot Pete and Wizard team-up (7/63) Comic Book Impact rating of 9 (CBI)

Doctor Strange didn't make the cover, but this issue of Strange Tales (with a notoriously low print run) features the first appearance of the Sorcerer Supreme. There's also debuts from the Ancient One, Nightmare, and Wong in the back-up story hidden behind Jack Kirby's cover art celebrating the Human Torch.

To be fair, the Torch's tale offers the first pairing of the Wizard and Paste-Pot Pete. Collectors are still after this classic comic for the introduction of Earth's top defender from mystical threats. And with the continuing success of Benedict Cumberbatch as the big-screen Doctor Strange, this book is sure to reach new heights in popularity!

The oddest part of the legend of this most oddball comic book hero is that he premiered in two pivotal stories, his first appearance by Lee and Ditko in Strange Tales #110, and then, his origin story in #115. Both issues are key for collectors of the mystic arts. It’s hard to believe that such a phenomenal character debuted quietly and without fanfare as a backup feature in a comic. Strange would soon overtake the popularity of the Human Torch's stories among the comic book cognoscenti and the older, more sophisticated audience that Marvel was cultivating. In fact, Strange Tales #110 not only holds its value for Dr. Strange’s debut, but also as an example of a transitional post-Atlas, pre-Marvel anthology book with stories drawn by Kirby, Ditko, and the other Marvel mainstay artists, making this is more than an entertaining comic; it is a valuable slice of comic book history.
