Amazing Fantasy #15 remains the Silver Age equivalent of Action Comics #1 as both a cultural artifact and an important investment for collectors. The introduction of Spider-Man notoriously shook up the comics industry with the premise of a neurotic Everyman gifted with extraordinary powers. There was also a different kind of tragic backstory fueled by Peter Parker’s guilt over the death of Uncle Ben. Jack Kirby caught the eyes of kids with one of the best covers in comics history; Steve Ditko took over the interior art while working with co-creator Stan Lee on this legendary debut. All that innovation made for this timeless collectible that's kept Spider-Man (and Peter Parker) swinging for over 60 years as one of the most iconic and collectible characters in comics.

“They were canceling the book anyway!” recalled Stan Lee. Indeed, Amazing Fantasy (previously Amazing Adult Fantasy, an attempt at more intelligent and slightly older readership with its Twilight Zone-type short stories by Lee and Steve Ditko) just wasn’t selling. Issue #15 would be its last, and so “It didn’t matter what we put in there.” And so, Stan’s desire to write an unconventional story found its opportunity, with a lonely hero who wasn’t glamorous, wasn’t vindicated at the story’s end, and didn’t get the girl. Stan originally gave the idea for the 11-page story to his top artist, Jack Kirby—but he didn’t think Kirby’s work cut the mustard, so, in a display of unparalleled editorial acumen, Lee gave the strip to Steve Ditko. Bingo! Ditko’s quirky style suited the comic perfectly, and the rest is comic book history with the first appearance of the Amazing Spider-Man.
