Gene Colan cover & art; origin retold (cont. from Iron Man and Sub-Mariner #1)
Stan Lee devised Iron Man as a creative challenge, seeking to invent a hero that embodied all the things that his youthful readership rebelled against. Thus was born Tony Stark, a shamelessly capitalist businessman whose fortune was built on war machinery and weaponry, a daring riposte to all the political trends prevalent in the late 1960s among Marvel's largely adolescent male readership. This first solo issue of Iron Man was an overnight smash, and with a cover graced with the visionary art of master draftsman Gene Colan, it is no wonder. The incredible success of the MCU has finally made Iron Man a top-tier character, but longtime comic fans have always known that this is one of Marvel's most complex and fascinating heroes.
Iron Man has been a staple of the Marvel Universe since early 1963 but didn't truly become a major part of popular culture until Robert Downey Jr. portrayed Tony Stark in the MCU’s first film “Iron Man” to unprecedented success. Loyal Marvel readers have always known how cool Iron Man is, and thoughtful collectors know that an NM/M copy of the character’s first solo book is a must-have Silver Age key, especially since there are only two copies known in a higher grade. The stunning artwork by the mighty Gene Colan on the cover of this nearly perfect copy only makes it more desirable!
