Creig Flessel Crimson Avenger cvr; last non-Batman cvr
This classic issue of Detective Comics #34 features the Batman, but also offers the book's last non-Batman cover for many decades. Detective Comics had previously started out as a typical anthology of the era, with a variety of moody pulp covers. Then the invention of the Caped Crusader changed everything.. This book also contains an ad for Flash Comics #1, plus contributions from Bill Finger, Bob Kane, Jerry Siegel, and Fred Guardineer, and that impressive Creig Flessel cover. That adds up to an undervalued key comic that should be on the radar of all Golden Age DC collectors.

With fewer than 100 copies of this book ranked on the CGC boards, this is a pretty hard-to-come-by issue, and this VF example sits very near the top of the census, with only six copies grading higher. There are a few minor condition issues but the overall appearance of the book is quite fresh, the masked figure at the center is bright and free of any wear as he tosses a helpless sailor overboard. The last of its kind, this final non-Batman cover of Golden Age Detective Comics is sure to draw the attention of fans of comic books' pulp roots.

Overstreet Guide 2022 VF (8.0) value = $13,600.
