Johnny Craig bondage, torture cvr; 1st issue (formerly War Against Crime)
Northford Copy
After WWII ended, comic books started their slow turn away from superheroes and towards genre titles, the fine folks over at EC were in tune with changing times, and, after working some horror-themed stories into their War Against Crime anthology title, they decided to switch the mag over to Vault of Horror, hence the #12 (#1) designation on this case. The success the publisher enjoyed with their new content is the stuff of legend, which we will leave for another day, suffice to say Vault of Horror was the baby of Johnny Craig, workhorse illustrator for EC, who was responsible for many of the inflammatory covers released by the imprint, Craig drafted all of the covers in this series’ run, and contributed every lead story save two.

There are a scarce 90 copies of this issue on the census, with this Northford pedigree book being one-of-four second-highest graded examples with only one book higher up the registry. The stark yellow background and sickly green logo are the perfect mood-setter for this gruesome grimoire, No, the cover does not depict the origin story of Plastic Man, it is one of the nascent EC horror covers that would soon begin causing the public much concern about the future of America’s youth. Tame in comparison to what would come after, this cover still exhibits the Grand Guignol treats within, illustrated by none other than Johnny Craig, cover artist extraordinaire. In July of 2021 a 9.0 sold for $24,499.00!

Overstreet Guide 2022 VF/NM (9.0) value = $10,928.
