origin of Manhunter by Jack Kirby & Joe Simon; classic cvr

Jack Kirby and Joe Simon made Adventure Comics #73 an instant Golden Age classic with their wild image of an oversized Starman grasping at a group of terrified gangsters. Then the duo also step in as the creative team for "The Secret of the Buzzard's Revenge," which introduces the same Manhunter who'd spend decades as a prominent DC figure.

In this bizarre debut, Simon & Kirby introduce the big-game-hunter-turned-crimefighter as he avenges a police detective pal. (The lead character here is "Rick Nelson," but that was soon changed to "Paul Kirk.") The villain is a particularly creepy crime lord known as the Buzzard, who rants about being an outcast and gladly leads a squad of cops to their death.

Our aspiring superhero then decides to prove he can trap bigger game than just wild animals, with Kirby & Simon adding plenty of twists as Manhunter stumbles through his first adventure. The character would be revived by Archie Goodwin and Walt Simonson in 1973's Detective Comics #437, but this is where it all began. (And if all that wasn't enough, this issue also has an epic Hourman tale with art from Bernard Baily.)
