Joe Kubert art; 1st stand-alone horror comic, bondage cvr
Eerie #1 is a vital first of the Golden Age, with this one-shot hitting the stands as the first true horror comic. Of course, it's no surprise that the book spawned from the notoriously populist Avon Periodicals. The company was still taking a big gamble on a comic packed with cover-to-cover creepiness. A two-page piece featuring Goofy Ghost is the only relief from tales of man-eating lizards, a nagging murdered wife, and more. (The art includes contributions by Joe Kubert and George Rousso.)
Eerie #1 sports a pioneering classic horror cover, too, courtesy of Bob Fujitani. Sadly, Avon wouldn't bother with a second issue. The company waited until 1951 to bring back Eerie amidst the success of EC Comics. The first issue of the revived Eerie would feature a reprint of "The Strange Case of Henpecked Harry" from this true pop-culture artifact.
