1st app of The Ray by Lou Fine
In the fall of 1940, Quality Comics introduced a brand new super hero to the world: The Ray! The level of talent that worked on this comic, which includes Will Eisner, Gil Fox, Paul Gustavson, George Tusk, Bob Powell and a sporty cover by Lou Fine, is astounding. Rare in any grade.

Will Eisner story, cvr/art; Bob Kane art; 1st and only app. of Wonder Man
Windy City Copy
Wonder Comics #1 owns a special little piece of comicbook history, you see, this issue is the one, and only ever, appearance of Wonder Man. Why, you may ask, did this character only survive through the first issue of his self-titled book? Let's just say it has something to do with one Clark Kent aka Superman, and the obvious resemblances between the two super-beings. DC sued Fox Publications over perceived copyright infringement, and the Will Eisner character was forced into early retirement, but has remained forever in comicbook lore. Wonder Comics, however, persisted, then morphed into the respected Wonderworld Comics after a few issues, which became the home of another Golden Age hit, The Flame, who would then go on the become the inspiration for the Human Torch, but that, my friends, is another story.

Lou Fine's 1st cvr (later swiped by Bob Kane); giant gorilla cover
Among the top artists in the history of the comics business, highly respected among his Golden Age peers and a towering influence on American illustrators since, Lou Fine got his start, like most Golden Age greats, working at the Eisner-Iger studio, ghosting for overworked strip artists and contributing art to numerous strips that helped keep the hungry machine of early comics moving. Quickly rising to the top of his field, Fine's clean and confident line and graceful style changed the look of comics and stood out amongst the crude work churned out by so many small publishers. This, his first published cover, already shows the young Fine at the top of his game, vividly and carefully presenting what, in other hands, would be a rough and gimmicky image. Fox's spotty distribution led to a low number of surviving copies, making this a rare treat indeed.

classic Lou Fine Flame cover
Cosmic Aeroplane Copy
This Golden Age gem features a classic Lou Fine cover as well as scripts and interior art from the legendary Will Eisner along with reliables Bob Powell and George Tuska. The origin of The Flame is the classic story of a young boy orphaned in the Far East who is brought up by monks who teach him the ancient secrets of fire manipulation and send him back to the West to fight evil. First published in 1939 by Fox Feature Syndicate, The Flame joined the super team, the Big 3, alongside The Blue Beetle, and Samson.

Spacehawks by Wolverton (1st comic work); Eisner, Cole, Kane art (6/38)
Highest Graded
Like many of comics' earliest artists, Basil Wolverton started out as a cartoonist, aiming for the funny pages of the daily papers, failing to find a home for his unique, surrealistic voice in the increasingly staid comic strip marketplace. His brief stint as a young vaudeville performer, and his eye for grotesquerie, resulted in a googly-eyed, manic, almost psychedelic style, decades ahead of its time. Luckily, the early comic book market was hungry for young talent that could produce stand-out material quickly and cheaply, and like many of the art form's pioneer, Wolverton got his break aping the comic strip fashions of the day for low-budget publishers, as in this incredibly rare entry from the tiny Globe Publishing company. The busy, harried cover belies the historical contents, as not only Wolverton, but future titans Will Eisner, Jack Cole, and Bob "Batman" Kane also get their early efforts published in this giant slab of early comics goodness. Serious Golden Age hounds know that historic documents like these are the "caviar" books of comic collecting, insanely rare and incredibly important.
