Colan cvr/art; origin retold
Stan Lee devised Iron Man as a creative challenge, seeking to create a hero that embodied all the things that his young and college-age readership rebelled against. Thus was born Tony Stark, a shamelessly capitalist millionaire playboy whose fortune was built on war machinery and weaponry, a daring riposte to all the political trends then prevalent among Marvel's largely young male readership. This first solo issue of Iron Man was an overnight smash. Graced with the jazz-like art of master artist Gene Colan it is no wonder. The recent smash movies have finally shoved the character into the national consciousness, but longtime comics fans have always known that this is one of Marvel's most complex and fascinating heroes.

Colan art (3/52)
Second City Collection
In the time period after the creation of the Comics Code Authority publishers had to obey a set of rules, which had basically defanged the industy. EC and other exploitation imprints were hobbled and the entire comic book business seemed on the brink of extinction. It was at this point that struggling companies like Atlas decided to slyly maneuver around the restrictions of the CCA and put out a glut of somewhat tame horror-themed comics in hopes of capturing the audience who suddenly had nowhere to turn for their cheap thrills. The artists that labored away on these shockers were unwittingly molding the style that would graduate to fruition once the super-hero craze reignited in the Silver Age. Mystery Tales #1 was ground zero for this interesting era, with submissions from Paul Maneely, Gene Colan, and Paul Reinman, this is a solid post-code horror comic classic.

origin of the Silver Surfer (8/68)
Having started life as a surprise character snuck into an issue of Fantastic Four by Jack Kirby without warning writer Stan Lee, the Silver Surfer quickly attracted the attention of Marvel's mostly high-school to college-age readership in the heady late '60s. The character's cosmic look, tortured back-story, and cool surfboard made him an instant favorite with the black-light poster crowd. Never one to shy away from a hit, Lee soon yanked the character from the pages of the Fantastic Four and into his own supersized title, with art from the frighteningly talented John Buscema, whose unerring sense of anatomy created a surrealistically concrete world around the cosmic being. Hugely popular to this day and likely to factor in upcoming Fantastic Four movie reboots, the Surfer continues to fascinate comic collectors and commands high prices in high grades.

Kirby cvr; Ditko art; origin & 1st app. Iron Man (Tony Stark) (3/63)
Realizing the growing Marvel audience was composed primarily of hip, and largely left-leaning high-school students and collegians, Stan Lee challenged himself to create a hero who would be the embodiment of everything the counterculture was railing against, and still elicit sympathy from readers. Thus, Tony Stark was born as an older, hard-drinking, playboy millionaire. Iron Man quickly became a cult favorite whose popularity has only grown over the years.

The origin story of Iron Man is one deeply rooted in the Vietnam War era. Tony Stark, a weapons designer, is brought in to help the U.S. government in their efforts to combat the Vietcong, whose guerilla tactics make the American military approach of bigger and badder seem obsolete in the steamy jungles of Southeast Asia. While conducting a test, Stark is mortally wounded by a booby trap and taken captive. While imprisoned, Stark constructs a suit of armor that contains an array of gadgets and firepower that also slows the approach of a piece of shrapnel inching inexorably towards his heart. Voila, Iron Man is born ready to do battle with the forces of Communism and other evils around the globe.

This VF/NM copy is nearly spotless, the muted colors retain their original sheen, and the binding is solid with sharp corners.

Overstreet Guide 2018 VF/NM (9.0) value = $31,100
