MLJ
CBCS FN+: 6.5
off white pgs; Mod/Ext(A) mod amt ct cvr, pcs added cvr, cvr & cfld reinf, spn splts sld, tr sls cvr & int., cvr clnd
1st app. of Archie, Betty, & Jughead
While the superhero craze was booming across newsstands, up and coming publishers like MLJ were looking for ways to stand out from the pack by creating new twists on existing tropes. In the case of MLJ, pay dirt had already been struck with Wilbur, the original comic-book teen craze, leading Bob Montana to pitch his idea for an awkward, girl-crazy teen based on his own experiences and sketches from his teenage years in small-town Massachusetts. As with his predecessor, the character's first appearance was an instant hit with readers, but unlike the rather cartoonish and limited Wilbur, Archie's personality and social circle were completely relatable to contemporary American youth, and proved to be not only resilient, but arguably the most commercially successful comic book creation of all time after Superman. This first appearance is incredibly rare, even more so than the first Action Comics, and invariably sells for record numbers on the few occasions it is offered on the market. This is probably one of the two or three most important comics ever published.

This key belongs in a category all to itself. It's one of those books that we're lucky to see every few years, and whose rarity and legendary status causes ripples throughout the office as we clamor to get a chance to look at this elusive treasure. One of the scarcest of major Golden Age keys, this first appearance of Archie Andrews has attained iconic status in recent years, as collectors have cottoned to its importance, value, and scarcity. Bob Montana turned his gangly adolescent past into universally-relatable four-color fodder, launching an entertainment juggernaut in the process.
This copy has undergone a moderate amount of amateur restoration, making it available to a wider selection of potential bidders. The colors retain their punch and the central image is quite spiffy. One can't really go wrong owning a copy of this rare and important key issue, even restored copies are breaking records when it comes to Pep #22.

Overstreet Guide 2018 FN+ (6.5) value = $105,750.

One of the scarcest of major Golden Age keys, this VG/FN example is in great condition. The cover belies its grade as minimal wear is apparent and the primary color-scheme maintains its vibrancy and clarity.

Overstreet Guide 2018 VG/F (5.0) value = $67,500.

Fiction House
CGC NM: 9.4

Eisner/Fine cvr; Kiefer art (1/40)
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy
Highest Graded
The first comic book devoted exclusively to science fiction, the scrappy genre that grew from the sweaty fever dreams of Victorian fantasists and exploded in the pages of the pulps, to eventually become the major American pop genre, and the modern mythology that continues to captivate the attention of the world. Planet was the four-color inheritor of publisher Fiction House's sci-fi pulps, boasting spectacular covers, soaring storytelling, barrel-chested heroes, and the eye-popping art of most of the period's major illustrative talents. Soaked in mystery, drama, high science, and a generous dose of cheesecake, these majestic works brought the grand scale and brash spirit of sci-fi to a new readership of young and impressionable minds, many of whom, inspired, went on to create their own worlds in galaxies far, far away, and in final frontiers around the universe. It's impossible to stress how important this series was to sci-fi history and a glance at these remarkable covers will seem like a Rosetta Stone for modern science-fiction enthusiasts.˙ý

˙ýPlanet Comics #1 was released as a companion book to Fiction House's Planet Stories pulp novels. The comic features art by legends Will Eisner and Lou Fine as well as Murphy Anderson (under the pen name Leonardo Vinci). The book also features the origin of Auro, Lord of Jupiter and appearances by Flint Baker, Spurt Hammond, and The Red Comet.
The highest-graded (1 of 2) example of Planet #1 in this auction is to die for, with blazing reds, sumptuous greens, lush greys, and glowing yellows in the logo, bearing only the slightest of imperfections, this is an incredibly rare book and there is guaranteed to be a heavyweight slugfest over this Golden Age gem.

Overstreet Guide 2018 NM- (9.2) value = $27,000.

classic Lou Fine cvr (2/40)
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy
Highest Graded
Featuring one in a long run of excellent, racy and thrilling covers, this second issue of Planet Comics picks up where the first left off. The art inside the book is a cut above the standard Golden Age fare, as are the storylines, which show the amazing distillation of the sci-fi genre from Victorian novels into small, digestable chunks, influenced heavily by the pulps that ruled the roost before comics took over the newsstands. Planet Payson, Flint Baker, Tiger Hart and Spurt Hammond all get in on the action in this GA classic!
Being that this is the highest graded copy on the census, and it hails from the vaunted Mile High pedigree, there is not much more to say than it is a beautiful, bright, clean, nearly perfect Golden Age comic book. It goes without saying that any book from the Edgar Church collection is not only going to go up in value, but will also be the subject of intense competition, as will every book in the Planet run in this auction.

Bob Powell art (one pg); Gale Allen and the Girl Squadron begins (4/40)
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy
Fiction House, a former pulp publisher, kept the adventure traditions alive when developing their comics line in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The covers of their periodicals reflected their ability to read their audience perfectly -- energetic imagery, violent action, brash colors; all designed to maximize newsstand attention and draw the eye of even the most jaded of readers. This gloriously insane cover is just one such example, and shows why collectors to this day go bonkers for all the Fiction House lineup. Note, also, the beginning of the Gale Allen and the Girl Squadron strip, an early entry into Fiction House's stable of Good Girl art series which would soon become their bread and butter.

classic early sci-fi cover
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy
Highest Graded
Its fitting that Bob Powell cut his teeth on Planet Comics, the first exclusively sci-fi title in comics, as the talented artist later went on to create the pencils for the beloved and iconic "Mars Attacks" card series that inspired the movie by the same name. Here we can see Powell's formidable skills as he creates a thrilling cover scene of space action. Inside the book's pages The Red Comet, Captain Nelson Cole, and Auro, Lord of Jupiter all make appearances in this classic Golden Age sci-fi romp.
The cover on this higest graded example is simply beautiful, considering its seventy eight-year age, it seems to have been kept in suspended animation, the bright yellow background contrasts perfectly with strong reds of the logo. Hailing from the Mile High pedigree this book will go for prices above the Overstreet estimate, owning any book from the Church collection is a dream only a few can claim to have made a reality.

classic Lou Fine Robot cover (9/40)
Edgar Church / Mile High Copy

Man, this cover has it all, warrior women, ray-gun wielding heroes, spaceships, and a sinister robot army, its no wonder that Planet Comics was a beloved title in its day, with a loyal following of fans, which has only grown in stature and respect in the modern day. Featuring contributions by John Celardo, Arthur Peddy, Bob Powell and Henry Keifer, issue #8 of Planet is yet another anthology classic, jam packed with spacebound swashbuckling from cover to cover. Fans of Golden Age comics salivate over issues from this run and this book is no exception.
It boggles the mind to take a gander at the Mile High run of Planet Comics, each issue is simply gorgeous, the books are so well preserved you'd think they were forgeries or reprints, but these are the real McCoy, and this copy of issue #8 follows in those revered footsteps. You simply cannot beat an Edgar Church pedigree copy when it comes to the Golden Age of comics, and knowledgable collectors are already planning their strategy to lay their mitts on these amazing Planets.

Edgar Church / Mile High Copy

Giant subterranean drills are a common trope in the armory of villainny, and this cover takes that concept to staggering new heights. The thread that runs through the continuum of early Planet Comics covers is the sci-fi tech and the bright, vibrant color designs, which was guaranteed to make the title stand out on spinner racks and newsstands back in the day. This particular issue of Planet Comics features stories starring cover hero Flint Baker, The Red Comet and "Crash" Parker, just to name a few. Art is contibuted by Golden Age stalwarts George Tuska, Henry Kiefer, Charles Sultan and Gene Fawcette.
Being the highest graded book on the CGC census is a true honor, and that honor has been bestowed on the Edgar Church/Mile High pedigree more often than any other, this copy of Planet Comics #9 is newsstand fresh, looking as perfect as a modern day book that has just been delivered to your local comic store. There is no down side to owning any Mile High comic, they have been known to sell at multiples of guide and are always trending upwards, making them a very smart investment indeed.
