Swamp Thing
Bernie Wrightson was arguably the best known and greatest of all the artists to come up from the swamp of fanzines and newsletters that comics-obsessed fans pumped out all through the late 60s and early 1970s. After working his way up through the ranks at Marvel and DC, mostly on horror anthologies, Wrightson, with writer Len Wein, hit upon the concept that would put their names on the map, Swamp Thing. Wrightson would go on to become one of the most-renowned illustrators in the industry, but his connection to Swamp Thing would remain strong throughout his career, this page, from the character's first appearance, stands as a testament to the lasting power of the shambling and misunderstood hero. This page is doubly historic as the top panel is the first-ever appearance of the character that would come to define DC horror comics and eventually lead to the creation of the revered Vertigo brand.

Swamp Thing
After having been banished from comics pages during the moral panics of the 1950s, horror comics finally made a roaring comeback with the loosening of the Comics Code in the late 1960s, allowing Bernie Wrightson, among others, to indulge their boyhood love of the macabre and grotesque. The final page from the origin story of the Swamp Thing is full of longing and a deep sense of sadness, words not usually used to describe horror anthology stories, but in the hands of a young virtuoso such as Bernie Wrightson, the comic art form is elevated to poetic levels. This sort of phenomenon is not unknown to the comic book industry, but it doesn't happen often, the instant creation of a classic character, and it is on this page that one can witness this event in black and white, the launching of a beloved hero, as well as the birth of an iconic artist.

Super Rare! 128 pages (1938)
Centaur Comics was one of the earliest and quirkiest publishers to compete in the comic book boom of the late 30s. Publishing titles like Detective Eye, Western Picture Stories, Star Ranger Funnies and Amazing Man Comics, the imprint covered all of the bases, dipping into every genre under the sun. This oddball comic, Little Giant Detective Funnies #1 was one of the anthology books that flooded the marketplace in those early, anything goes days of comics, when the American Dream was being lived one dime at a time. Kids were snapping up funny books in droves, and ambitious businessmen were more than happy to supply issues of all shapes and sizes, these truly were the Wild West days of the industry. The humorous cover art was rendered by the talented Martin Filchock, and hinted at the the delights hidden within the incongruous sideways and undersized comic. Truly a unique, extremely rare, and fascinating piece of early comic book history.

RARE!; pre-dates Detective Comics #1, first comic based on a single theme!
Detective Picture Stories, the first-ever "themed" comic anthology title, is essentially pulp magazine style and storytelling converted into comicbook form. There is something endearing and charming about these books, with their occasionally crude or clumsy artwork. You cannot deny the primal, gut level that these strips operate on. Though the title only existed for five issues, during that time, Will Eisner and Bob Kane both got early breaks that allowed them to eventually make their mark on the young industry. These are special pieces of historic Americana and pop literature and a startling memory of a time before men could defy gravity and see through walls.
