1st Superman by Siegel and Shuster
Second City Collection
The most important comic book in the history of comic books. This is the introduction of the archetype of all other heroes to come. Superman transcends comic books and pop culture. He is an icon of Truth, Justice and The American Way! Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman is quite possibly the most recognizable fictional character in the world. The creation of two struggling sci-fi fans from the Rust Belt, the Man of Steel became an instant icon to depression-era readers, and easily transformed into an icon of American spirit and spunk during the brutal days of WWII. Since then, he has lasted as both a beloved character and a symbol of modern hope and vigor, making this first appearance not just a piece of comics' history, but of American history as well.
The discovery of this Action 1, in 1986, simply rocked the comic book world. Pittsburg Pennsylvania. A lucky buyer wins a lot of old hardcover books at a local auction. The next day he opens up one of the hardcover books to find a copy of Action 1 hidden between it's pages. Exactly how it got there, forever lost to the ages (but probably a very interesting story).

Cut to a NYC comic book convention 2 weeks later. A non-descript Pittsburg man walk into the show looking for opinions about his monumental discovery and possibly offers. What followed was a 48 hour feeding frenzy unmatched in the annals of comic book fandom. Safe to say, if murder were legal at that time, certain comic dealers would have not walked out of that show alive. Due to the simple fact that a number of the individuals who played a role in this episode are still very much alive, we will not expound on the gritty details. But those same gritty details, including a near fist fight, was the start of a story that ends with the Action 1 offered here. The very same Action 1.

Overstreet Guide 2017 VF+ (8.5) value = $1,775,000.

Kirby cvr/art; origin & 1st app. Dr. Droom (Doctor Druid)
Second City Collection
Amazing Adventures #1 is notable for a few reasons, the main being the introduction of Dr. Droom, the first superhero character of Marvel's Silver Age, a nearly forgotten footnote in what was about to become an explosion of iconic, beloved mainstays of the Marvel Universe. Droom was later renamed Dr. Druid, to avoid confusion concerning one Dr. Victor Von Doom, but Droom also served as a prototype for Ditko's more memorable Dr. Strange. The title Amazing Adventures would soon morph into Amazing Adult Fantasy, and shortly thereafter Amazing Fantasy when the series hit issue #15, by which point the Silver Age would have been off and running, mere months after the publication of this important and underrated book.

Kirby cvr; Ditko art; origin & 1st app. Spider-Man; 1st Uncle Ben & Aunt May (8/62)
Second City Collection
This is the Silver Age equivalent of Action Comics 1: an historic, game-changing key issue that acts as a pivot point from what came before, and what came after. The creation of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, this radical new concept featured a passive, neurotic, everyman hero; an unusually emotionally charged origin story touching on issues of mortality and family tragedy; a worldview grounded solidly in a real, recognizable universe obviously our own; and open-ended storytelling that demanded and rewarded close reading and regular readership. This milestone comic has also proven to be the success story of comics investment, growing rapidly and unstoppably in value and becoming one of the few completely bulletproof investments in recent times.
This 7.5 example is in beautiful condition with a clean cover. The colors are quite impressive and the edges are nearly perfect. While Amazing Fantasy #15 doesn't look to be going out of style anytime soon, high-grade copies are always at a premium when they come to market.

AF #15 holds a special place as one of the most common Silver Age keys but also one of the most valuable, a phenomenon rarely heard of in collecting. Aside from the wear at the top, the rest of the cover is really quite fetching, maintaining bright colors and great eye appeal, making this a pretty spiffy GD copy.

Where previous heroes had their origin stories based in spectacular events, dramatic twists, and high tragedy, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko firmly planted their flagship character's feet in the hard ground of daily life in the big city. Shy, insecure, lower-class teen, Peter Parker, drawn to scrawny imperfection by Ditko, transforms into a freakish, wise-cracking daredevil, tortured by guilt over the loss of his father figure, all while scrambling to make a quick buck from his sudden brush with semi-greatness. Spider-Man's first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 was like nothing anyone had seen before and was an instant success, leading to a hurriedly prepared solo debut issue. Note the use of the Fantastic Four on the cover as insurance, as their group exploits were Marvel's one real box-office draw at the time, and the hungry, ambitious Lee was taking no chances. One of the most important comics of the Silver Age, and the book that proved the Marvel Age of comics was no fluke.

1st app. Vulture; 1st app. the Tinkerer

It's telling that in the first appearances of their new creation, Lee and Ditko played it largely straight, setting up their teen hero against the troubles of city life and garden-variety thugs, peppered with a bet-hedging cover appearance by the Fantastic Four. By this point, though, they clearly knew they were on to something, and so this initial attempt to expand the webhead's world to include super-villains began with the villainous Vulture, an odd but somehow appropriate nemesis for the new hero. This is also the first truly classic cover of the series, with Ditko's nightmarish visuals allowed to flower in full, backed by an aggressive red-based color scheme that hadn't been tried on Marvel's books to that point.
