VERY RARE!! small-press run of 50-100! 1st Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles app. on full page back-cover ad
Gobbledygook was an early 1984 Mirage Studios production, a homemade black and white comic co-created by Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird, featuring the 1st appearance of Fugitoid, the fugitive android, a classic Eastman/Laird character that would go on to have his own series and star in other Mirage and TMNT media. Even more significantly, Gobbledygook #1 featured a back cover ad for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 before the comic’s release, making this the first true appearance of the team. As a small-press book with a print run of only 50-100 copies, this is an extremely rare and historic publication. Without Gobbledygook #1, there is no Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1, and none of the countless books inspired by the success of the Turtles. As a homemade creation, all copies must be personally verified by Kevin Eastman, and the production process involving individual xeroxing and stapling makes high-grade copies incredibly rare.

#2 on Overstreet's top 25 Copper Age books, copies of this book are excessively rare with CGC having only graded 14 copies, and only one of those higher than this one.

Gobbledygook #1, along with #2, collect work that Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created in the years before the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles including Fugitoid, who makes his print debut here. The highlight of this book, made all the more special by the incredibly small print run, is the back cover which features a full page ad for TMNT #1 which wouldn't be released for months, making this their very first print appearance. the last 9.0 copy, which didn't present as nicely as this one, with signatures only on the inside sold earlier this year for $71,390.

These books were made on early 80s photocopiers and because of that are often counterfeited, CGC will only grade copies that have been inspected for authenticity by Kevin Eastman. This copy was taken directly out of the production line and is realistically in as nice condition as the book can be, given how it was produced there are unavoidable flaws due to the nature of the photocopy process. As pretty a copy of this book as you will ever see!

This copy comes from Mirage Group CEO Gary Richardson, who has worked with Eastman and Laird for decades, and includes his COA. The book has also been signed and sketched by both Eastman and Laird on the back cover ad, and Laird has added a sketch on the inside cover with a turtle saying "It's Authentic!".

Overstreet Guide 2021 VF/NM (9.0) value = $6,416.
