ComicConnect is back with Event Auction #53, and with it comes another great selection of original comic art. The art selection is highlighted by three pages from Todd McFarlane’s hugely influential stint on Amazing Spider-Man. Up for bidding are #311, page 6, and #319, pages 15 and 16. McFarlane’s Spider-Man pages are among the most coveted in the hobby, and we’re excited to see new collectors acquire them. We also have four rare and historic Sunday Pages by Russ Manning from the Star Wars newspaper strip. The strips include one of Manning’s try-out strips,  the second ever Sunday stripthe only Sunday featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the first Sunday page appearance of Boba Fett, which pre-dates Marvel’s Star Wars #42. These Star Wars strips very rarely come up for sale, and this assortment represents some of the finest examples in the entire run.

The selection also features some stunning covers, including Giant-Size Super-Villain Team-Up #2 by Gil Kane, Al Milgrom’s fantastic cover for Marvel Team-Up #61 featuring Spider-Man and the Human Torch, J. Scott Campbell’s stellar Spider-Man cover for PlayStation Magazine #47 from 2001, the Dark Knights: Metal #1 variant cover by Jim Lee, and Marie Severin’s cover for Tower of Shadows #4. Additionally, we are proud to offer Frank Thorne’s cover for Our Fighting Forces #149, noted for being Thorne’s only major DC war cover, as well as Ross Andru’s cover for DC Comics Presents #5, an unpublished cover for Spectacular Spider-Man #22 by Keith Pollard featuring Spidey and Moon Knight, and Ron Lim’s cover to Stormwatch #28 featuring the 1st appearance of Swift from The Authority. There are also covers by Alex RossRich BucklerLarry LieberTim TrumanRyan StegmanPaolo RiveraRuss HeathMike VosburgBarry BlairBill Ward, and a tremendous, unpublished cover by John Romita, which was created for a charity book in the 1990s.

We’re also excited to offer up the entire 1st issue of Extraordinary X-Men by Humberto Ramos, including the cover and all 30 interior pages. It is very rare to get a complete 1st issue from a significant Marvel title, especially one as beautifully crafted as this. Within this issue are four double-page spreads, several splash pages, and characters like Storm, Magik, Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, Iceman, Colossus, and Old Man Logan. This auction also features several complete stories, including a very rare story by Jim Aparo from The Phantom #34, Art Saaf’s story from Supergirl #10, an incredible story by Tony DeZuniga from Weird War Tales #13, and Herb Arnold’s tale of horror from Fantagor #3.

On top of all that, Event Auction #53 also features a breathtaking painting by Bill Sienkiewicz, which was created around the time of Elektra; Assassin, as well as a drawing by Frank Frazetta, Ron Frenz’s original concept art for the Silver Sable, an early 80s drawing of Frankenstein by Bernie Wrightson, a page of Wonder Woman illustrations by Alex Toth created for an Underoos ad campaign, a portrait of Swamp Thing by Art Adams, a Warlock trading card illustration by Michael Allred, and C.C. Beck’s only published cover recreation, a fully painted version of the Bulletman cover from Nickel Comics #6, along with a preliminary by Beck for a recreation of Master Comics #21.

There’s also a genuine piece of comic and movie history, the original concept illustration for the first Fantastic Four film that would be released in theaters. This illustration was drawn in 2005 by Mark “Crash” McCreery, a lead artist at the Stan Winston Studios who worked on films including Jurassic Park, Edward Scissorhands, Terminator 2, and many more. The drawing is remarkable, created in graphite, and shows the possibilities that could be achieved in bringing Marvel’s first family to the big screen.
