For those comic collectors out there who are unfamiliar with the Golden Age, although you may have a general knowledge that Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman existed back then, you just may be missing out on the incredible wealth of talent that illustrated Golden Age comics, as well as some of the big-name heroes of the era that have been lost to the tides of time. Two names that will invariably come up in discussions of the artists that ruled the roost at the dawn of the comic book industry are L.B. Cole and Alex Schomburg. These two legendary artists rose above the overwhelming crush of draftsmen that vied for page space in the exploding industry, their undeniable skills and personal style helped separate them from the pack of the wildly varying levels of talent that made it into the pages of GA anthology books.

Alex Schomburg is generally considered to be the greatest artist of the wartime era, his effusive and chaotic battle scenes are known throughout the hobby as the prototypical example of WWII comic covers, which were often emulated but never duplicated. His penchant for filling a page with mind-boggling amounts of detail has yet to be rivaled, even in our modern, digital era. Some particularly important Schomburg issues to look out for in our Event Auction include: Real Life Comics #3 CGC 5.5, Captain America Comics #46 CGC 3.0, Fighting Yank #13 CGC 9.2, and the beloved Startling Comics #49 CGC 8.5. Along with Schomburg, the works of L.B. Cole are greatly appreciated among Golden Age aficionados, his bold and bright, self-titled “poster color” technique is hard to forget once one has seen it, and will be instantly recognizable upon viewing any Cole cover. Cole is recognized today as one of the standouts of the era, and his art speaks for itself, from his romance covers to his more esoteric horror pieces, the powerful graphic approach he employed jumps right off the page. Look for these special L.B. Cole issues in our Event Auction: Suspense Comics #9 CGC 7.0 & 11 CGC 8.5, Ghostly Weird Stories #123 CGC 3.5, and Great Comics #1 CBCS 8.5.

Another aspect of the Golden Age that draws quite a bit of attention from collectors is the variety of oddball characters that populated the pages of these anthology books, many of whom have been tossed into the dustbin of history, relegated to the public domain, or, if they are lucky, revived in a modern storyline. One of the more impressive and successful runs was Catman Comics, whose books remain popular at auction today. A bit of a blatant knock-off of a similarly monikered Caped Crusader, Catman garnered a loyal fanbase thanks to above-average art and compelling storylines, and managed to rise above his copycat (pun intended) status to carve out a niche all his own. Catman issues #4, 9, 14, 19, and more are all available in ComicConnect’s Event Auction #43 right now.
